Sweat the Subsurface Road Race and Fun Run/Walk- September 2023

Author: Darren Hinks, Road Race and Fun Run/Walk Chair

The highly anticipated Sweat the Subsurface Road Race, originally scheduled for June but postponed due to unforeseen smoke conditions, finally took place on September 28, 2023, marking its triumphant return since 2019.

Thanks to the unwavering support of our generous sponsors, the organizing committee successfully hosted not one, but two post-race parties, demonstrating their commitment to creating a memorable experience for participants. The first of these gatherings, aptly named the ‘warm-up’ post-race party, unfolded in June at The Garage in Eau Claire. Despite the race cancellation, approximately 60 registrants came together to connect and share their experiences amid the smoke-induced setback.

Undeterred by the challenges faced earlier in the summer, the committee dedicated their efforts to crafting a second event in September. This time, the focus was squarely on reigniting the camaraderie and friendly competition that defines our shared community of geologists and geophysicists.

The race itself, boasting over 50 enthusiastic participants and a dedicated team of volunteers, showcased our industry’s fastest runners. The post-race celebration continued well into the night, creating an atmosphere of jubilation as prizes were awarded, and participants reveled in the shared achievement. The networking that transpired throughout the evening became a testament to the bonds within our professional community, with stories shared, friendships rekindled, and new connections forged.

Heartfelt appreciation is extended to the entire committee, the organizers at CEGA, and the support of the CSEG, without whom this event would not have been possible. The indispensable contribution of our industry sponsors deserves special acknowledgment, as their generosity played a pivotal role in bringing this event to fruition.

As we reflect on the success of the Sweat the Subsurface Road Race, we eagerly anticipate building upon this achievement in the coming year. Plans are already underway to enhance and elevate the event, ensuring that it continues to be a highlight on the calendar for geologists and geophysicists alike. A sincere thank you to everyone involved for making this year’s race and festivities an unforgettable experience. We look forward to seeing you all again next year!
